November 2021 Update

Hello Arisen,

I know I've made the joke about a million times now (and will make it a million more), but if I could experience time in a non-linear fashion, I'd have skipped right over these past 20 months! That said, things seem to be starting to sort themselves out, and I'm hopeful the next few months will start to bring good news on many of our projects on the go.

Obviously, the delay in printing the Mummy: The Curse hardcover book was a frustration this year, but we're nearing Onyx Path's spot in their printer's schedule and hopefully in a path to catching up. With next month's update, I anticipate beginning our lockdown schedule, where we confirm rewards, collect any outstanding payments from BackerKit purchases, and confirm shipping information. We're still some time from that, and I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but it's not a bad idea to maybe take a look at your BackerKit page and ensure it's all in order for when things get real.

September 2021 Update

Hello Arisen,

We're finishing up September, so time again to check in our our project listing and see where we stand. Even with our printing delay (see Update #55), there's still lots of excitement and enthusiasm around Mummy: The Curse - the PDF is in the Top 10 titles at DriveThruRPG.com! Hopefully things will start to smooth out over the next several months and we'll be able to enjoy even more Mummy when our stretch goal reward works it's way to us.

Reward Distribution - Discounted Print-on-Demand links

Hello Arisen,

It's been just over two weeks since our official "August 2021 Update," which was a bit of a bummer because it was mostly about the printing delays that are currently re-scheduling some Onyx Path books. But one of the bits we also talked about was Onyx Path's push to get the Print-on-Demand version available as soon as possible, and then get discounted purchase codes out to backers who had that as part of their rewards.

And that brings us to today...

So, as noted in last month's update, the hardcover rewards from this campaign are suffering a printing delay, which means we won't be shipping those until early 2022. That said, Onyx Path will be updating the backer PDF at DriveThruRPG to the final version soon, and will be making the Print-on-Demand versions available via DriveThruRPG.com. As backers from the Kickstarter campaign, many of your rewards (Deathless and up) included a discounted Print-on-Demand link, allowing you to purchase a PoD version at a reduced price. I'll be sending those redemption links out through BackerKit shortly.

Again, just to ensure it's understood - THIS IS NOT YOUR KICKSTARTER HARDCOVER REWARD! This is not a substitution, this is a discount link for the PoD version that will eventually be released for purchase on DriveThruRPG.com (but YOU can order it early!) The kickstarter hardcovers are currently delayed until 2022, as described in our monthly update, and will be shipped out to you as soon as they are available.

DIFFERENCES IN PoD FORMATS

So, for those backers who pledged at the Deathless reward tier, or those backers who will later be receiving the hardcover book but might be looking for a second copy for the table, there are two different versions of Print-On-Demand options available.

Standard Color uses a thick 70# white paper which has better page opacity. (that's "70 pound" for reference, but does not mean each page weighs 70 lbs!).  Standard Heavyweight Color uses inkjet technology. (These are not the same inkjet printers you have at home - these are often as big or bigger than a car!) This option offers lower cost but the colors won't be as sharp or bright as a Premium Color book.

Premium Color uses the same 70# paper, but uses a digital offset press. This option offers superior color quality but is more expensive to produce, and will be getting even more expensive in a few weeks.

(Remember to login to DriveThruRPG prior to clicking or pasting the discount link in your BackerKit digital rewards locker, if you that was part of your rewards list! That link is your coupon and must be used for your PoD order.)

That's one more reward to move from our Pending list to our Delivered list! Again, you will receive an e-mail from BackerKit with a link for this reward over the next 24 hours if it is on your expected list of rewards.

The easiest way to see if you've got digital downloads available is to login to your backerkit account: https://mummy-the-curse.backerkit.com/backer/digital_rewards and it'll show anything available. August 2021 Update - Printing Delay

It's time for our month end update, but also time for some disappointing news. 

Looking back at the original Kickstarter, we had set up projected delivery dates of April 2021 for the PDF and October 2021 for the hardcover. The hardcover dates are usually padded a bit to account for unfortunate circumstances and unplanned problems, but even still the Onyx Path team was ahead of the schedule when the Mummy: The Curse 2E backer PDF went out in February, two months earlier than planned!

And now the bad news...

Despite getting the project ready early, the infrastructure needed to turn the digital files into the hardcover are still suffering from the events of 2020, and we are now looking at a delayed delivery for our hardcover rewards.

Rich covers the big picture in last week's Monday Meeting Notes blog <here>, but the short version is that even though Onyx Path has mostly avoided the overseas manufacturing and shipping crisis that is currently plaguing many other game companies (and many other companies in general), they're not immune to ongoing issues related to ... well, everything from the past 18 months.

LOCKDOWN AND DELIVERY PLAN

So, despite getting the PDF out to us five months early and having the digital files to the printer well in advance, Onyx Path won't be receiving the books until 2022. The printer is projecting February at this point. This is incredibly frustrating and disappointing, and sadly, probably something that you're going to be hearing from a bunch of companies over the next 6 months.

I'm going revise our order lock plan, pushing it off for now, and instead we'll go through that whole process at the end of the year. So expect an update in November that will outline the lockdown process and a plan to ship the books the second they hit the warehouse in February 2022.

To repeat: We're going push the lockdown process until the end of the year, and likely Lock Orders in December 2021, Process Payments in January 2022, and Confirm Addresses in February 2022.

While that's incredibly frustrating, that doesn't mean the project will just go on hold until the hardcover rewards are printed. Again, from Rich's Monday Meeting Notes, the plan is to get the Backer PDFs updated on DriveThruRPG to the final print versions as soon as possible (if they haven't been already). You'll get a notice from DriveThru when that happens (depending on your communication settings with them), and are able to re-download the latest version of the Mummy: the Curse PDF at any time from your digital library.

In fact, if you go to your digital library on DTRPG, you can select the UPDATED ONLY tab and just see those titles that have been updated since your last download. That makes it a little quicker to check.

In addition, Onyx Path is working on getting Print-on-Demand versions made available on DriveThruRPG and once those are approved, I'll be sending out discounted cost links for anyone who wants to order a print-on-demand copy. These won't be quite as awesome as our hardcover rewards when those are finally available next year and won't be a replacement, but at least make the book available in some form for us. I'll have more information when those become available to us.
